MESSAGE FROM

THE GM

It is my pleasure and honor to present the annual report of the Oakview Group managed Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center – a year that built upon the last as we expanded our business activity growth into a maturing, yet still new convention center and the further re-development of a historically good live event market region. This year we welcomed new staff as we worked to properly support the increase in event utilization of the complex with more conferences, meetings, banquets, sporting events and live entertainment.

At the Oakview Group managed Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center, we believe that cultivating a positive and collaborative work culture is key to encouraging creativity, productivity and support among our team leads to successful outcomes for our clients.

As I reflect on this past year, I think of our outstanding employees that are the foundation of our success. It is the entire teams unwavering commitment to excellence, that we again have delivered exceptional financial and performance results. Our successful achievements would also not have been possible without the trust, support and recommendations from our clients and partners to whom we are deeply grateful. While we recognize our successes, we know the hard work is not complete. We promise to maintain our commitment to the excellence the greater Kanawha Valley residents and businesses deserve and look forward to an even better 2023-2024.

The support of the Coliseum and Convention Center Board of Directors and the City of Charleston has been vital to our growth and success. We are especially grateful for the close partnership and collaboration with the Charleston Convention and Visitors Bureau, and we remain focused on our role as an economic engine for the city, creating business activity and fueling our economy.

Our future bookings are strong, and we continue to explore new and unique opportunities to meet our client’s and community’s needs in an ever-changing environment.

Kelli Peters, Sales Manager

TOURISM AWARDS

The CCCC team accepting the Most Significant Transformation award at the 2023 Charleston CVB Tourism Awards

"Few industries have seen as much change in the last three years as the live entertainment industry. In Charleston, though, that industry has been thriving due in no small part to the efforts of our next winner. To enhance the concert and live entertainment experience, the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center has invested in infrastructure and technology that breathes new life into the facility. A curtaining system that can make a 13,000 seat Coliseum seem like an intimate venue, grab & go coolers to cut down wait times at concession stands while driving even more revenue, and a VIP experience through the development and implementation of the Parlor Club are just a few ways that the Coliseum & Convention Center has been transformed. "

"The Presidents Award goes to someone who delivers exceptional service to the local tourism industry while most of their work happens in the background, without recognition. Kelli, after returning from COVID furlough has helped to organize, facilitate, and execute events that have generated millions of dollars in economic impact for the city."

GREEN INITIATIVES AT THE CCCC

We Have Honeybees

We make a buzz in Charleston – literally. We introduced the first urban beekeeping garden within city limits. We have three beehives with more than 150,000 bees. In addition to the beehives, our beekeeping garden includes a Chef’s Garden that features organic herbs and flowers.

Reducing Our Footprint

WV American Water Company has partnered with us to provide water filling stations throughout the facility, this enables our clients, patrons and staff to stay hydrated and help reduce the plastic bottle footprint in our community. In just a few months we were able to reduce plastic waste by a 3,840-bottle equivalent and continue our commitment to minimize our impact on the environment.

PROJECTS &

UPGRADES

THEATER ROOF REPLACEMENT

The scope of this project was to replace the existing damaged roofing at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center Theater (approximately 2,740 square feet). The project consisted of removal of the existing roofing materials, repairing the metal roof decking and building up a new roof to 2023 building standards. The new roof includes better drainage and additional insulation to improve temperature and sound control in the backstage area of the Charleston Theater.

MARDI-BAR (Bar 117)

Mardi-Bar is our new full service bar in the coliseum, with partnership from Mardi Gras Casino with the attractive addition, we are able to offer premium spirits to our patrons which has been well received.

GRAB & GO

Ticketed events in the Coliseum, Municipal Auditorium and Theater continued to lead the overall revenue mix at 57%. We expanded the effective Grab-and-Go Drink concept by adding 14 reach-in coolers. These additional coolers increased the guests’ offerings.

FOOD &

BEVERAGE

Sodexo, our exclusive in-house hospitality team, saw catering business surpass pre-pandemic levels with approximately 85% of our local bookings returning to the facility along with more regional events. As the overall facility became much busier, we also focused on managing the process to allow for positive gains. As we made strides to elevate guest offerings and experiences, the team worked towards managing the costs just as intently.

Todd Tinney, General Manager Sodexo

“Success breeds success and we are looking ahead at 2024 to see where we can further develop operations and create new revenue streams, enhance what the team has accomplished and fine tune the process.
